Medium Bauxite Discs from Nigeria

Here is a nice 21" strand of Red-Pink Bauxite discs from Nigeria circa 1900s. Discs average approx 10mm wide x 5mm tall (with some bigger and some smaller), with a 3mm hole.  What’s "bauxite"?  It is a  rock, comprised of iron and aluminum, and is the primary ore of aluminum.

Trivia time: Professor Charles Martin Hall of Oberlin College developed a method to cheaply extract aluminum first from cryolite & then bauxite ore in 1886.  Bead Paradise is located in Oberlin, OH.
